Andrew Johnson

May 23, 1929 — April 6, 2019

Andrew L. (Larry) Johnson passed away on April 6, 2019 at the age of 89 in Las Vegas, NV.  He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Virgie Lee, two daughters, Patricia Brockman (Bo) and Donna Friedrich (Dennis), eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, a brother Douglas Johnson of Albertville, AL, many nieces, nephews, and cousins including especially beloved cousin Rey Del Jackson of Columbia, TN.  He was born in Columbia and joined the Navy on his 17th birthday.  He was stationed in many cities along the coast of California and Virginia.  His ability and aptitude for mastering new technology was recognized and he received specialized training in electronics in Minnesota at the Great Lakes Training Center.  He spent much of his 21-year Naval career at sea and served on the USS Oakland, the USS Toledo, the USS Bonne Homme Richard, the USS Frontier, and the USS Preble. He was one of only 18 Navy personnel to have the designation of Data Systems Technician, a title given to enlisted members trained as electronic technicians specializing in Naval tactical data computer systems. He retired from the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer in Imperial Beach, CA in 1968.

His training and experience in the Navy led to a second career with Cubic Corporation Defense Department.  He was a manager of Cubic’s Air Combat Maneuver Range (ACMR) for training pilots until his retirement in 1989. He and Virgie had moved so many times with the Navy that after his retirement from Cubic they decided to stay in Las Vegas.  He enjoyed playing poker and his favorite game was Omaha High Low.  He played regularly at several area casinos and especially enjoyed his time at Sam’s Town where he was very well liked and respected for his capability and gracious manner.

He was a devoted and protective husband, a proud and loving father and grandfather, and his grandchildren will remember him as being able to fix anything! He was a man of integrity, a consummate gentleman, and well regarded, respected and admired by his co- workers, friends, and neighbors.  He will be remembered as a fine, intelligent, kind and responsible man.

His burial will take place Friday, April 12, 2019 at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery.  There will be a short graveside service at 9:20 a.m.  In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be made in Andrew’s name to Southwest Medical Hospice and Palliative Care, or a charity of your choice.  Family and friends can sign an online memorial guestbook at www.bouldercityfamilymortuary.com
