First Sergeant Carl Russell Cox, USMC retired, a long-time resident of Asheville, NC passed away January 10, 2018 at the age of 76. He was born May 30, 1941, in McColl, SC to Carl and Alice Cox. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1957 and retired in 1981 after serving three tours of duty in Vietnam. He married Linda Wininger in 1970 and they had two children together.
Carl was a member of the Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge and the Morningside Baptist Church in Asheville, NC. He enjoyed restoring old cars. He loved Nascar racing and did some drag racing and stock car himself. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He volunteered many hours performing military honors at the Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC.
Carl is survived by his two daughters Judy (Richard) Kennedy of Alaska and Karen Cox of Nevada; three grandchildren Joshua Kennedy, Alice Kennedy, Abby Rose Zeigler; two brothers Wainwright “Button” Cox and Edwin Cox. He is preceded in death by his parents Carl and Alice Cox; and a brother Harley Cox.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 22, 2018, at 9:20 am at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial, 1900 Veterans Memorial Dr. Boulder City, NV 89005. Family and friends can sign an online memorial guestbook at www.bouldercityfamilymortuary.com
