Doris Marlene (Shultz) Essex

Marlene Essex, age 91, passed away on August 15, 2025 in Mesquite, Nevada. She had been living at the Mesa Valley Estates since April.

Marlene was born to Walter Everett and Vera (Jacobs) Shutlz, May 19, 1934 in Snyder, Texas. She was number 5 of 9 children. In 1943, the family moved to Clovis, New Mexico. She graduated from Clovis High School Class of 1952. Marlene met the love of life, Ralph Erwin Essex. They married August 22, 1952.

Ralph and Marlene enjoyed camping, fishing, and being “rock hounds” with their four children. The family had a blue, 1955 school bus, converted into a camper. There are many stories and fun memories from their trips.

Crafting, sewing and reading were some of her hobbies. Marlene enjoyed taking care of her plants, flowers and her home. For many years, Marlene and Ralph belonged to a rock and mineral club, and an antique automobile club. She was a member of Kingswood Methodist Church in Clovis, NM. As she became advanced in age, she enjoyed crafting and mingling in senior citizen centers in Clovis, Yukon and Mesquite.

Doris Marlene Essex was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Essex (2021), her parents and four of her siblings. She is survived by her sister, Carolyn Rose and brother Hollis Shultz. And her 4 children: Dena (Steve) Mesquite, NV, David (Donna) Essex, Clovis, NM, Carla (Phil) Hundley, Beaver Dam, AZ and Tameron (Terry) Peterson of Yukon, Oklahoma. She was known as Grammy to her grandchildren, Denise Houston, Dawn (Charlie) Lee, the Essex boys, Brian (Erica), Carlton (Nish), and Kendal (Verónica), and Theron and Teagan Peterson. Marlene has thirteen great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild with one expected in November.

The family would like to thank the Mesa Valley Estates staff and nurses for their exceptional care and friendship to our Mom. We also thank the Mesa View Hospice and Home Care, for their friendship and love. Marlene Essex requested a memorial service in Okeene, Oklahoma where her ashes to be spread at the Essex Family plot.
