Gary Lee Huckins, 74, passed away at his residence in Mesquite, Nevada on July 15, 2025. His wife and best friend of 47 years was by his side when the angels came to take him home. His courageous battle with cancer was finally over.
He was born in Southern California but traveled extensively with his family as a child. Among his favorite places growing up was Springdale, Utah, where his parents ran the Allred’s Cabins outside of Zion National Park. He also lived briefly near Anchorage, Alaska and was there during the 9.2 earthquake of 1964.
He met his wife, Lori (Glaza), in Sherman Oaks, California in 1976 where they both worked at the Sherman Oaks Tennis Station. They married in 1978 and became inseparable companions. They enjoyed many hours over the years listening to music, watching movies, and playing video games together. In their early days, they were known as the “Gold Dust Twins” because of their similar appearance and blond hair. During their journey together, they met an incredible group of people and had amazing experiences. Gary used to say that no one would believe him if he told them his life story.
As a young man, he mastered many professions but spent his final working years as the Senior Digital Electronics Technician for Ikon Office Solutions, Inc. in Connecticut where he and his family lived for 37 years. His natural talent for lawn care made his yard the envy of the neighborhood and he enjoyed making things grow. He also took great care of his many neighbors, even though health issues often made it a challenge. He and Lori moved to Mesquite in 2018.
Gary had a warmth and joyous spirit that lit up the room. He knew how to make people feel valued and appreciated. He had a fabulous sense of humor and loved to laugh. Gary also shared a kindred spirit with animals, and was loved by many of the dogs that walked through the neighborhood. But his most cherished furry friends were his cats, especially his Franklin who passed away in 2022 and his current kitty, Iris. His beautiful daughter, Tuesday, and gifted grandson, Aidan, were the source of immeasurable pride, and he was grateful and blessed to have been able to spend his final days in their loving presence.
Gary is survived by his wife, Lori of Mesquite, NV; his daughter, Tuesday (& Jim) McCarty of Waxhaw, NC; his grandson, Aidan Wade of Waxhaw, NC; and nieces Laura, Erin, Michelle, Amanda, and Kelly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Archie O’Neil Huckins and Evaleen (Crouch) Spinka; his step-father, James Spinka; his beloved grandmother, Altha E. Butterfield, his brothers, Scott Spinka and James Huckins; and his dear lifelong friend, Charles “Skip” Price.
His family will commemorate his amazing life at a private celebration in California in the months ahead.
Gary would wish to thank his dedicated medical team at the Intermountain Cancer Center in St. George, the kind and loving staff of the Senior Helpers of Southern Utah and the compassionate nurses of Mesa View Hospice.
