John Schleppegrell

February 15, 1926 — May 31, 2019

John D. Schleppegrell, who went by “J.D.,” passed away peacefully at 11 am on 5/31/19.  John was 93 years old, and lived in Boulder City, NV.

John is survived by his 5 children: daughters Tammy, Karen, and Linda and sons Terry and Ronald.  John’s family included great-granddaughter Hannah Beebe, the brightest star on earth, and grandsons Dane Beebe and Jackson Schleppegrell.  John’s family also included Joyce Schleppegrell, Ron’s wife, and Noelle Beebe, Dane’s wife.  The Pellouchoud family is another branch of John’s domain, including Dan and Karen, and John’s granddaughters Paige, Megan, and Amy.

John was raised by his parents Thorald and Harriet Schleppegrell, from Princeton, Minnesota.  He honored us all by serving in the U.S. Army in World War II, contributing under General Patton to the Battle of the Bulge.

John was very proud to have started the Badger Road Grocery Store, from scratch, in Fairbanks, AK.  His grocery business prospered, and grew into Steese Market, also in Fairbanks.

He was also very proud of his active involvement in community affairs, serving on numerous boards, commissions, and committees.  He was elected to the position of Borough Chairman of the North Star Borough, which included Fairbanks, serving from 1963 to 1964.  Those were tumultuous times in Alaskan politics, as the State of Alaska had mandated the formation of regional government, in the form of boroughs, and the citizens of Fairbanks generally opposed the addition of any government.  John’s wisdom and matter of fact leadership helped corral the diverse opinions to comply with State Law.

Mr. Schleppegrell was also appointed as Director of Rural Development for Alaska by Governor Walter J. Hickel in 1966.

John also had a rewarding career in the real estate business, eventually creating his own real estate corporation as an owner/broker.

John’s enduring message to all of us is to contribute to our communities and society, and go fishing every chance we get.

Private burial was held.  Memorial Services will be held Friday, October 4, 2019 at 10:40 am at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Veterans Memorial Way, Boulder City, NV 89005.  Family and friends can sign an online memorial guestbook at www.bouldercityfamilymortuary.com
