Mary D (Melcher) Johnson was born May 13, 1939 to Russell and Vernus (Palmer) Melcher in Aberdeen, South Dakota.  She was baptized and made her first communion at Sacred Heart Church in Aberdeen, S.D.  On October 14, 1958, Mary wed her sweetheart; Harlan (Skippy) Johnson.  Together they had three daughters.  The family resided in Minnesota and South Dakota and in later years, retired to Nevada.

Mary spent a number of years as a homemaker, but also worked as an electrician and a clerk at Citibank, S.D.   She enjoyed sewing, embroidery, ceramics, quilting, baking, camping and reading.  She played a few tunes on the harmonica.  She loved playing cards and games and organizing family gatherings.  Holidays, especially Christmas, were always made magical by this beautiful woman.  She was a loving caregiver throughout her life to family and friends.


Mary passed away peacefully in Mesquite, NV on November 5, 2022 surrounded by love.  She leaves behind her daughters; Mary (Randy) Boyd, Michelle (Rick) Peterson, and Lorrie (Mark) Mitchell.  She is also survived by eight grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren, one brother; Duane Melcher, one sister; Cheryl Anderson and numerous other family and friends.  She was preceded in death by her husband; Harlan (Skippy) Johnson, her mother; Vernus and father; Russell, her sisters; Pearl and Virginia, brothers; Mick, Patrick and Joseph, and grandson, Eric.

The lives she touched are forever changed for the better.  A memorial service will be held in Sioux Falls, S.D. in the Spring of 2023. The family invites you to leave a message or memory on her Tribute Wall at www.starmortuary.com.
