With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Owen Dale Slack, age 80, of Pinedale, Wyoming, who passed away peacefully on March 9, 2026, surrounded by the love of his devoted wife and two daughters in his Mesquite, Nevada home.
Owen was a truly devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and loyal friend. To those who knew him best, he was a steady presence, someone who showed his love through his actions, his loyalty, and by always being there when it mattered most. His life was defined by integrity, quiet strength, generosity, and an enduring commitment to his family.
Born on July 15, 1945, in Fruita, Colorado, Owen was the son of Walter and Lois Slack. He graduated from Meeker High School in 1963, went on to proudly serve in the United States Army, and later pursued higher education at Mesa State University, ultimately graduating from Adams State College with a degree in business.
Following his military service, Owen began a long and accomplished career in the energy industry with Texaco, where his work took him and his family to several locations, including Quito, Ecuador, where the family lived for two years while he worked abroad. He later returned to Wyoming and made a permanent home for his family in Pinedale, where he continued his career as a Well Site Manager with Chevron (Texaco). Owen retired in 2012, leaving behind a respected legacy of professionalism and dedication.
In September of 1969, Owen married the love of his life, Jeannie, beginning a partnership that spanned 56 years and was built on love, mutual respect, and unwavering devotion. Together they raised two daughters, Tara, born in 1970, and Jordan, born on New Year's Eve in 1974. As a father, Owen was a constant source of guidance, encouragement, and unconditional love. His influence will live on in the values he instilled and the memories his family will forever cherish.
Owen was a proud family man who loved reminiscing about his youth and growing up on the family ranch. He had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and found joy in golf, cooking, camping, horses, pack trips, and time spent with family and longtime friends. In retirement, he and Jeannie enjoyed traveling together in their RV, adventures that eventually led them to purchase a second home in Mesquite, Nevada:
As a grandfather, known lovingly as Popi, Owen was a cherished storyteller, a man of wisdom, and a quiet protector. He delighted in sharing stories, offering guidance, and being a steady, reassuring presence. Yet, despite his strength and resolve, he would happily cave in a heartbeat to any request from his grandchildren, who held a special place in his heart and, brought him endless pride and joy. Owen was immensely proud of his grandchildren and took great joy in each and every one of them.
Owen is survived by his beloved wife, Jeannie Slack, of Pinedale, Wyoming and Mesquite, Nevada; his daughters Tara Slack (Steve Miller) of Bozeman, Montana, and Jordan Florek (Deon) of Chaska, Minnesota; his grandchildren Camden Slack, KyLynn Florek, Gavin Florek, and Lucien Knoch; and his sisters Lois Rae Beall of Austin, Texas, and Cindy Susoreny of Tempe, Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his parents Walter V. Slack, Sr. and Lois Slack; his older brother Walter V. Slack, Jr.; and his sisters Rebecca Harp, Eileen Hampton, and Mary Dawn Carstens.
Owen will be remembered for his kindness, his steady nature, his laugh that could light up a room, and the love he gave so freely to those around him. Though his absence leaves a profound void, his legacy lives on in the hearts of his family and all who were fortunate enough to know him.
A Celebration of Life in Owen's honor will be held on May 9, 2026, in Mesquite, Nevada. A second celebration will take place later this summer in Meeker, Colorado, where Owen will be laid to rest. Details will be announced at a later time.
