Reginald (“Reggie”) Timms passed away peacefully at home in the arms of his beloved wife, Judy Timms, on the afternoon of May 20, 2024. Reggie had survived throat cancer and was in remission for 19 years before succumbing to the surprising return of the same cancer in the Spring of 2024.
Reggie was born to Dorothy Elford and Ronald Timms in Lakewood, California, on November 14, 1946. He was the oldest of three children. He is survived by all his siblings, Diana Treadway and Alan Timms.
Reggie married Sheila Purcell in 1966 and had two daughters, Cindy and Kimmy Timms, before divorcing. In 1974, Reggie married Barbara Mae Thompson in Carson City, NV, and had two daughters, Regina Hambrick, and Patricia Ann Timms-McGehee. Reggie became the stepfather to Barbara’s daughter, Anna Marie Jettie. In 1993, Reggie and Barbara divorced, and Reggie married Judy Hansen in 1995 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Reggie became the stepfather to Judy’s children, Shantay Mellor, Ronnie Martinez, and Richard Martinez. All his children and stepchildren survive Reggie. Among all his children and stepchildren, Reggie was grandfather to sixteen: Samantha, Ali, Thomas, Nicole, Dustin, Madeline, Taysha, Lukas, Alina, Talia, Nolan, Jonas, Fischer, Finley, Ellee, and Charlie, and a great-grandfather to two: Aiden and Sloane. Fifteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren survive him.
Reggie joined the Navy in 1963, at 17, serving two tours in Vietnam as a sonarman on a search and rescue ship. Following his tours, he was honorably discharged from the Navy and pursued his dream of driving a diesel, as he considered truck drivers “The Kings of the Road.” He later joined the Navy Reserves, becoming Chief Petty Officer of the Seabees unit. He became a Chief Safety Officer at Dick Simon Trucking before leaving the trucking industry to become a State Trooper for the Nevada Highway Patrol Commercial Division. He graduated from the Police Academy in 1997 when he was 51. He spent 15 years with the Nevada Highway Patrol, retiring in 2012.
Throughout Reggie’s life, he had a passion for drag racing his cars and wrenching on them in the garage. His drag racing began at 16 when he put slick tires on his red 1962 Chevrolet Chevelle. His children and grandchildren have fond memories of sitting at the racetrack watching Reggie racing by. His passion for racing would later inspire many youths. He and other police officers hosted “Beat the Heat” at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, encouraging kids to keep racing on the track and off the street. The Nevada Highway Patrol sponsored Reggie’s 1988 Chevrolet S10 mini pickup truck by permitting him to use its logos, sirens, and lights on the race truck.
At the end of his life, Reggie often reflected on his grand adventures with his wife, Judy. Together, they enjoyed racing cars, riding their Harley-Davidsons, camping, fishing, and boating.
Reggie was a patriot, a husband, a father, a grandfather, and a force to be reckoned with, and he will be deeply missed.
