Roy Poindexter

Jan 20, 1942 — Jun 23, 2026

Boulder City

Roy "Butch" Poindexter passed away on the morning of June 23, 2026, at the age of 84.

Roy was born on January 20, 1942, in Wilmington, California, to Max and Evelyne (Young) Poindexter. He was raised in Southern California and loved telling stories about growing up there, especially about the many different cars he owned - and raced on the streets.

Roy graduated from Banning High School in 1959. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps, and later in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves, from 1965 to 1971.

In 1969, Roy married Sonja Hester, the beautiful young woman he met at the Sears counter. Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion for more than 57 years.

In 1970, Roy began his career with the City of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (DWP). In 1977, he was transferred to Boulder City, Nevada, where he and Sonja raised their three children and found the place they would forever call home.

Boulder City suited the family perfectly. It was a close-knit community with holiday parades, annual DWP family picnics, and easy access to Lake Mead, where countless summer days were spent boating, waterskiing, and relaxing on the sandy beaches with family and friends.

After 30 years with the City of Los Angeles, Roy retired. He and Sonja spent the early years of retirement exploring North America in their motorhome. That is, until the first grandchild arrived. Then the motorhome was parked, and the spoiling of grandchildren began.

His grandchildren quickly became the center of his world. If you gave Roy just a minute of your time, chances were you were going to hear about each one of them and every accomplishment they had achieved. Nothing made him prouder than his family.

Roy was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend. He never met a stranger. He had an extraordinary gift for making people feel welcome, and by the end of a conversation, even someone he had just met felt like an old friend. His kindness, genuine interest in others, and easy smile left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Roy is survived by his beloved wife, Sonja; his sons, Scott (Carly) and Gary (Katy), both of Boulder City; his daughter, Brenda (Dennis) of Las Vegas; his cherished grandchildren, Sabrina (Beau), Haley, Tyler, Violet, Geddy, and Trenton; and many other family members whom he loved dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Max and Evelyne Poindexter; his sister, Lillian Jane Forsberg; and many treasured family members and dear friends.

Services will be held Sunday, July 5, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Star Mortuary, 900 Nevada Way, Boulder City, Nevada.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Roy’s name may be made to the Boulder City Hospital Foundation. The compassionate care Roy received from the staff at Boulder City Hospital during his final months was beyond anything our family could have imagined, and we will always be grateful.
