Verdell Samuel Bell Jr., age 73, of Mesquite, Nevada, passed away on November 28, 2025. He was born on August 6, 1952, in Austin, Texas, to Verdell Samuel Bell Sr. and Lottie Mae White Bell. He and his mother relocated to Yakima, Washington, where he grew up and went on to become a High School Football Champion with the A.C. Davis Pirates.
After graduating, Verdell moved to Ogden, Utah, to play football for Weber State University — a move that would change his life forever. It was there that he met the love of his life, Chandra Wynne Ficklin. The two dated for 10 years before marrying on October 24, 1986. She preceded him in death by 166 days, and now they are reunited again.
Verdell dedicated his life to service and community. He retired from Weber Human Services after 30 years of compassionate work and also found joy in coaching youth sports, mentoring young athletes both on and off the field. He loved participating in the annual Ogden 5K and spent many happy days tending to the smoker in his backyard, sharing barbecue and laughter with those he loved.
Verdell is survived by his children: Toni Ballzar, Jeremy Bell, Margueritte Bell, Jamal Bell, and Maya Bell; as well as a host of grandchildren who adored him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Chandra, and their beautiful baby girl, Natesha Celeste Bell.
Verdell will be remembered for his strength, his warmth, and his unwavering devotion to his family and community. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched.
A private service will be held in Ogden, Utah. Family and friends are invited to leave condolences and memories at www.starmortuary.com
