Curtis Walters

Curtis R. Walters, 71, passed away at his home in Henderson, Nevada, on Friday, February 26, 2016.  He was born December 9, 1944, in LaMesa, California, to Cooney B. Walters and Louise Walters.  Curtis was the older of two boys and grew up in Flagstaff, Arizona.  He worked hard at his studies graduating from Northern Arizona University where he studied Education.  Curtis met his wife Dianne, of 51 years, while attending college; the two were married December 19, 1964, in Tempe, Arizona.  Soon after graduation, they relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada, where Curtis began his teaching career and family.

Curtis was an elementary and middle school teacher in the Clark County School District for 32 years.  During this time, he received his Masters in Education from the University of Washington.  He taught school in Las Vegas, Nevada, and 2 years in the Seattle, Washington area.  Upon returning to Nevada, he taught several years at Fay Herron Elementary School in North Las Vegas, but the bulk of his teaching career was spent in Boulder City at Andrew J. Mitchell Elementary School and Elton M. Garrett Jr. High School.

Curtis was always a hard worker.  He often spent many hours tutoring and mentoring students before and after school during his career.  He viewed education as a way to improve himself and others.  He instilled this in his children and also encouraged his students to set high goals and work hard to reach them.  Even after school, the work wasn’t done. He always had side projects going, where he could use his imagination and creativity in construction projects, building homes, and landscaping.

Curtis enjoyed having fun as well.  As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he played church softball for many years.  He was a formidable foe at ping-pong too.  He had a good sense of humor, was a big tease and loved a good prank, whether it was done to him or someone else.

Curtis was driven by principles in life, such as hard work, sacrifice, service, determination, honesty, integrity, and being a good example to those he encountered.  He enjoyed helping friends and serving others.  He worked selflessly to ensure that his family was well taken care of.  He was most proud of his children and grandchildren, and enjoyed attending the many events they participated in.

He is survived by his wife, Dianne Walters, his children, Renee Walters and Stephen (Heather) Walters, and three grandchildren, Sarah, Jenna, and Julia Walters.  He was preceded in death by his parents and brother.

Graveside Services will be held on Thursday, March 3, 2016 at 11:00 am at the Boulder City Cemetery.
